BREEDING TO IMPROVE OUR ALPACAS, BUT COLOURFULLY …

Of course, when we began our selection, we were aware about the priority aspect in constituting an herd of animals with good conformation, in sound health, and with superior quality of fiber.

But there was another aspect that really appealed to us.

Nature has honored alpaca fleece with a special large and lovely colour spectrum, 22 recognized main colours plus many intermediate shades in addition.

Solid colours are really pure and uniform such as snowy white or true black which can be so deep as to show blue reflections.

Warm browny tints range from hazelnut to coffee.

The beige fleece can look so softly opalescent and the fawn one can be so shining in golden shades.

The grey melange getting on itself metallic reflections such as silver or bronze, and how about unusual roan or rare modern grey … wow !!

How to prefer one over the other? We really aimed at all of them, as the polychromatic whole is even more exciting.

We were very drawn to this fine amazing fiber and his peculiarity of being naturally colored with the biggest color range out of all the natural fibers, so not requiring any chemical dyeing process, which  often causes damaging effect reducing the tenacity of the wool.

We unquestionably considered all of this as a crucial resource to focus on.

INTERESTING TRIVIA ABOUT THE MOST GLORIOUS PROGENITOR FOUND IN OUR BLOODLINES …

BRIEF LOOK AT THE LEGENDARY “SUPER SIX”…

The so-colled “SUPER SIX” is a group of 6 stallions that Roger Haldane imported to Australia under the Purrumbete prefix.

Each was magnificently, powerfully potent, and they transformed international alpaca breeder’s perception of excellence.

These 6 Stud Males would have officially come from Chile, but the off-the-record version disclose their true provenance from the Accoyo herd. These were some of the finest machos ever to come from Accoyo: Purrumbete Highlander, Purrumbete Inti, Purrumbete Ledgers Dream, Purrumbete El Dorado, Purrumbete Snowman and Purrumbete Sir Titus Salt.

Mainly the first 4 of them put their stamp on the Australian national breed. While Highlander is better known as “Sire’s Sire”, El Dorado achieved world fame in the alpaca world mainly through its female offspring.

Even today these lines have an enormous influence on breeding in Australia and in large parts still determine the show events today.

After the deaths of Highlander, Ledgers Dream and El Dorado, these stalions became legend.

The “SUPER SIX” plus some stallions in the States were hand-selected by Don Julio Barreda and sent out into the world as business cards. When Barreda was asked why he was selling his best stallions, all he said was that the name of Accoyo would always be equated with this supreme quality. In doing so the Accoyo name would never be forgotten in the universe of alpaca breeding. The Accoyo Farm reputation is based on the quality of these stallions and on the influence they have in Australian and American national breeding.
